Help

How does the Simulator work?
From the Stopping Distances home page, click Try the Simulator. At the next screen, input your chosen speed, select your conditions and then click Run the Simulator. Note: If at this point you fail to see the Pedestrian Injury Simulator in operation i.e. a moving simulation of a car and pedestrian, you will need to install the Flash Player.

How to get Adobe Flash Player
To be able to view the RoSPA Pedestrian Injury Simulator you will require the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. The Flash Player is free, easy to get, and available to everyone on the web.

Dial-up Users
The Pedestrian Injury Simulator is designed to be viewed with a high-speed Internet connection. If you have a dial-up connection, the simulator may therefore appear very slow and may not function correctly - see also minimum system requirements below.

3D Minimum Playback System Requirements
The following system requirements pertain to viewing 3D content with the Shockwave Player. Keep in mind that these are minimum system requirements. Lower-end systems that still meet these requirements will likely perform significantly slower than higher-end systems.

Windows:

  • Pentium II 266 MHz (with a current hardware accelerated 3D graphics card)
  • Pentium II-class 300 MHz (without hardware accelerated 3D graphics card)
  • Windows 95 (or newer)
  • DirectX version 5 (or newer)
  • 32MB System RAM for playback
  • 4MB Video RAM for 16-bit usage on hardware accelerated 3D graphics card
  • Browsers: Netscape 4.x, IE 4.x, AOL 4.0

Macintosh:

  • PPC 233 (with a current hardware accelerated 3D graphics card)
  • G3 300 (without hardware accelerated 3D graphics card)
  • OS 8.1 (or newer)
  • Open GL 1.1.2 (or newer)
  • 32MB System RAM for playback
  • 4MB Video RAM for 16-bit usage on hardware accelerated 3D graphics card
  • Browsers: Netscape 4.x, IE 4.5, AOL 4.0

Note: the term "current" as applied to hardware-accelerated 3D graphics cards refers to products released during 1998 or later. Performance varies among graphics cards . These products are often referred to as "second-generation 3D graphics cards." The latest 3D graphics cards make use of features like 32-bit rendering, multi-texturing, alpha-blending (transparency), anti-aliasing, etc.

How do I navigate the site?
All of the pages on the site have the same 'look and feel'. Here’s how they look from top to bottom:

The top of the page contains the Stopping Distances banner, which you can always click to return to the home page.

Below this, the page splits into two areas:

  1. The left-hand (Navigation) area contains section-specific navigation down the left-hand side of the page which will take you to the main sub-sections and pages of that part of the website.
  2. The main area (Content) is where you’ll find the text of the page to which you have browsed.
  3. Below that you'll find the footer area which contains links to the Accessibility, Copyright and Contact Us pages.

If you have any problems navigating the web site contact: furtherinfo@stoppingdistances.org.uk

How do I increase or decrease the text size?
You can change your text settings through your browser options: in Internet Explorer, go to View > Text size and select your desired text size setting (eg. larger, smaller); in Netscape browsers go to View>Text size. Select a larger or smaller 'percentage' or click on 'larger'’ (or ‘smaller’) to go one size up or down.

Change the size of the image shown on your screen
The Stopping Distances web site is designed to function visually in all screen resolutions (800x600 upwards). To change your computer screen settings on a PC running the Windows 95 and upwards operating system, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display > Settings and change the desktop area by using the sliding bar.

On an Apple Macintosh, you can use the Monitor & Sound Control Panel to change the resolution.
